Map and touristic guide of GORIZIA town in Friuli

The great and powerful Castle of Gorizia testifies the independent spirit and the high civil level of this town which has been able to remain autonomous from 1000 to 1500 a.C., against before the Aquileia Patriarchate and after the Venice Republic, becoming at last for 500 years capital of a prosperous county under the protection of Habsburg Empire.

The main attractions of the town of Gorizia are the medieval complex around the Castle of 1300, with double walls, and a typically middle-european urban structure: airy and with well definite main streets (first Corso Italia) and scattered with big and small palaces, churches, monuments and garden of various ages.
In the western side of the town flows solemn the Isonzo river.

An interesting aspect of the town are some singular thematic museums that also the hurried tourist must not miss. Three of them are just on the castle hill:
- First World War Museum, rich of relics and very meaningful scenic reconstructions
- Museum of the Fashion and applied arts
- Ethnographic Museum.
The other museums are rich of works of art and of period furnishing on show (besides in the austere medieval castle) in the Petzenstein and in the Lantieri palaces, which well explain the widespread high civil and cultural level of the people in the Habsburg ‘old provinces’.

Also the Gorizia castle itself is a cultural mine (open every day, excepted monday). It contains: furnishing of different ages / complete collections of medieval steel weapons, siege machines and musical instruments / Illustrative panels and models of Gorizia County.
You must visit, starting from the castle hill (where into the walls is also a small village with the S.Spirito chapel):
- University restyled upon neogothic structure of old nineteenth-century hospital
- well structured complex of Lantieri Palace including a nice square with open gallery on three sides and an ancient tower
- Duomo of 1600, rich of vestements and works of sacred art
- Rabatta palace
- Municipal palace of 1700
- Evangelical-methodist church
- Ancient ‘borgo’ in Via Rastello, close to the castle hill, with several centuries-old buildings
- S.Ignazio Churche of 1600 in the Vittoria square, with two bell-towers and characteristic onion cupoles
- Attems-Petzenstein palace with historical-artistic museum
- Synagogue
- Coronini palace with wide park open to the public
An walk along Corso Italia (from the centre to the railway station) will explain to you the look and the way of life of an authentic middle-european town.

The town is very rich of vegetation, with several public gardens, and it also has a large park with recreational and picnic facilities on the western side o the Isonzo river in Piuma suburb.
