Map of historical centre of the town

 All the streets and squares of Cividale where is an important building (drawn in the map below) merit a visit because, in addition to the same building, they offer very nice architectural sceneries with the surprise of picturesque corners into the courts. It is valid for the whole historical ancient centre which is not only the restricted area around to the Duomo, but extends from Borgo San Domenico at North to Borgo di Ponte at South, where the ancient walls finish.
  Between several palaces and houses of various ages, the gate-towers and segments of ancient walls, the works and buildings more important are:
- Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’Bridge, 1400),
- Ipogeo celtico (Celtic Hypogeum with underground passages) a little more northern of Ponte del Diavolo; - Church and monastery of San Francesco and the connected (with a flight of steps and a communication trench) old mill in a picturesque little valley;
- the Duomo of 1500 with various works of art between which a precious altar piece;
- Medieval house, S.Maria in valle Monastery and Tempietto longobardo (lombardic little temple 650 a.C., open from monday to friday 10-13.00/15.30-18.00, saturday sunday and public holidays 10-18.00 € 4) the main historical-artistic jewel of the town, in Borgo Brossana;
- the Paolo Diacono (lombardic historical writer) square with his native and several ancient houses, and also, in a near narrow street, a convent (today restaurant).
  We signal that you could enjoy the best view of the Natisone river with the Devil bridge and town scenery from southern side, in Borgo di Ponte, which contains also many historical buildings, so the cloister of Municipal centre, the eighteenth-century building with park of the National Boarding School, the complex of the habsburg De Senibus palace with two courtyards and other building: one of them was the stage –post for Wien (now osteria-ristorante).
  Primary Museums:
- Christian Museum and Duomo's Treasure (with several works of lombardic age) at the Duomo southern side (open from wednesday to sunday 10-13.00/15-18.00 € 4);
- National Archaeological Museum (roman and lombardic) in the square at the Duomo northern side (open monday 9-14.00 and from tuesday to sunday 8.30-19.30 € 4)

  This high-hilly ground, seemingly barren, offers the best panoramic views on Cividale surroundings, erosive phenomenons (typical of the friulan 'Carso'), the suggestion of lonely meadows and woods, in an uncontaminated environment, ideal place for healthy walks along the hills’ ridge.
  The landscape and naturalistic targets are: - the top of Fortino hill with panoramic point over Cividale and Torreano Valley
- circular walk from Guspergo to Monte dei Bovi and Buse dal Foràn (and ruins of the ancient castle)
- view of Natisone riverbed (big rocks and erosive phenomenons) by the bridge of San Quirino; possible walk along the left bank of the river toward Purgessimo village
- ascent to the top of the little Purgessimo mountain (a drop of 300 meters) for view of castle ruins of 1400 and large panoramas toward both Cividale and Natisone Valleys.

  This area is rich of historical buildings, made in different ages, which have two characteristics: to be all on the top of hills, therefore they offer beautiful panoramic views; to be the residence of winery farms, all almost visitable and with the direct sale of its wines.
  They merit a stop-over:
- the complex with court of 1600 in Fornalis
- the ancient-modern building complex in Barbianis
- Stroppolatini villa of 1800 (between Gagliano and Spessa)
- the little village with towers of Sant’Anna
(Rubini villa neoclassical of 1800 in Spessa is not visible from the outside).
  For naturalistic and recreational walks there are particular facilities in the Bosco Romagno park, between Spessa and Prepotto, rich of several species of brad-lived and acerose trees.
  In this area of Cividale Municipal district some traditional ‘trattorias’ and holiday farms propose the true typical local cooking, in particular the game.
