TRIESTE: the engaging town where the Middle Europe meets the Mediterranean Sea
Trieste is without doubt one of the most beautiful towns of the European continent and, at same time, of the Mediterranean area, rich of ancient and modern buildings set in a splendid neoclassical frame. Trieste is risen just in the point where the large friulan-slovenian Karstic Tableland steeply goes down towards the sea, beginning the typical low istrian coast. Open and friendly, with a solid middle-european culture, lighted by Mediterranean brightness, Trieste shows many civil and artistic evidences (of the 18th and the 19th century especially) and a popular style of life very original and likeable. |
The heart of Trieste town is subdivided in three clearly distinct parts which correspond to the three historical-artistic periods and so to three courses that we suggest: - Roman and Medieval - Neoclassical and Art-nouveau - Modern and Maritime There it is at last the Trieste’s Riviera which extends towards North until the Miramare Castle( along the railway). |
ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL TRIESTE
(red-orange colour) Named ‘Città vecchia’ (Old City), this part of Trieste is collected at the foot and on the slopes of the San Giusto hill. The buildings are generally small, side by side and in old popular style (many of 18th and 19th centuries). We indicate the historically more interesting buildings, beginning from the more ancient ones: - Riccardo Arch of first century b.C. - Roman Amphitheatre with the same age - San Silvestro Church of 1000 a.C. - San Giusto Basilica of 1300 a.C. - San Giusto Castle of 1400 - San Cipriano convent of 1400 - Cucherna Tower of 1500 - Santa Maria Maggiore Church of 1600 You can go up the Castle hill by car or also walking on the monumental and scenographic staircase ‘Scalinata dei Giganti’ |
NEOCLASSICAL AND ART NOUVEAU style TRIESTE
(fucsia colour) This part of the town extends from the railway station at East until, along the ‘Rive’ (shores), the freight harbour at West. It is named ‘Borgo Teresiano’ because it was built in very few times when, in 1750 year, the empress of Austria Mary Theresa chose Trieste as the main maritime harbour of the Habsburg Empire. This area is characterized by perpendicular streets and compact blocks like the typical Middle European towns The most interesting buildings are: Town Hall / Carciotti Palace / Borsa (Stock Exchange) building / Tergesteo Gallery / Tommaseo Cafè / some churches of various religions: Chatolic Sant’Antonio, the Evangelistic one, Greek-Orthodox one, Serbian-Orthodox one, the Synagogue. Among the Art-Nouveau buildings, two very significant are in the Borgo Teresiano: Terni-Smolars palace in via Dante 9 (by-street of Corso Italia towards Sant’Antonio Church) and Bartoli House in Borsa square. If you will pay attention not only to the architectural appearance but also to the internal decorations and furnishing in any historical buildings (public palaces, private houses, museums, public places), you will have pleasant surprises of good taste and originality. Other interesting districts (with big and small buildings also in Baroque and Art-Nouveau styles) are present in the whole rest of the town: exemplifying is the ‘Campo San Giacomo’ area, near the San Giusto Castle, which makes you understand the historical urban environment in which lives the most part of Trieste people.
MARITIME AND MODERN TRIESTE (grey-blue colour)
It develops along the sea principally consisting in the ‘Rive’ (shores), a large straight band which goes from the railway station to the freight harbour (Chiarbola district). From it they branch off: toward the town the port-canal; into the sea various quays (where warships and holiday cruisers often dock).
On the Rive there are some interesting buildings as the Maritime Station (Congress centre) and the Pescheria (old style Fishmonger’s market, now Aquarium). On the end of the Rive, turning towards the bypass-road, in front of the freight harbour is risen a directional centre with some big and fine modern buildings. Also the modern mediterranean architecture has in Trieste a nice example: the Cuore di Maria Church, near the railway station. Another big building to visit in Trieste is the University of 1930 in neo-roman style, located in a panoramic point on the road rising from the town centre to the Opicina suburb on the Karst. |

TRIESTE’S RIVIERA from the Lighthouse to the Miramare Castle
The coast road starting from railway station takes before to . - the Vittoria Lighthouse, open for admiring a close view of the town after to - Barcola, the suburb when you can rest in the public park and on the sea-side: from this point begins a promenade (with bathing facilities) 2 km long until - the Miramare Castle, built in 1860 by Maximilian of Austria in Windsor style, with a very nice park and botanical garden, sea park, historical railway station; into the castle (entry fee) there are rich period and seafaring furnishing, exotic and historical objects.
Who want do an unique experience can take the ‘tram de Opcina’ (tramway to the Opcina suburb, starting near the railway station) which rises steeply on a rack track until the edge of the karstic tableland where he will have a splendid view of whole town (from the Obelisco point).
