THE WINES of Friuli Venezia Giulia region

The friulian wines (both the native-autochthonous and the transnational-allochthonous ones) are, in the most part, fresh and ‘young’ wines, fruited and stimulating: it should be drunk within a year. For the more raw wines (especially the native red ones) we advise following ageing of one or, at maximum, two years. In this guide on-line the qualitative description for single vine are referring only to the no aged wine.
In the Friuli Venezia Giulia the vine is present since the antiquity and still today has a fondamental importance in the agriculture, able to boast even 25 native varieties no existing in any part of whole world.
On the other hand, the presence in the region of even 9 areas DOC (Registered Designation of Origin) does not be a reason of confusion, because in effect its productions are no much different except in the strenghtness. In fact the difference among a friulian wine obtained from the same vine (for example, Refosco) in the dry or wet flat land or on the hills is only in the thickness of the body (light, medium, robust) not in the taste and in the quality, which are equal. The hill wines, which in fact are the more robust, generally have a greatest price because, above all, the cultivation is more difficult and expensive.
For every wine we will advise some Producers for which it constitutes the top of the production. In the drawing besides we descript the type of goblets recommended (among the below represented ones) for the best tasting (volatile essences maintenance; oxygenation).

Where are cultivated the typical wines of Friuli Venezia Giulia

Semplifying the complicate and excessive historical subdivision in 9 Doc areas, the viticultural territory can be considered of two types:
- the areas with strong soils (heavy mixtures, marls, clays, sea sediments) which naturally produce robust wines: these separate areas are located at East and at South (in light brown in the map)
- the area with 'poor' soils (light mixture, middle calcareous or gravelly: in yellow colour in the map) or ‘normal’ (middle gravelly-calcareous-clayey mixture: in orange colour in the map) which give naturally slim wines: this large area extends from the centre to the whole West of the region
In the first area the largest part of the production is controller and directed by the following Consorzio Doc: Orientali del Friuli (www.colliorientali.com), Collio (www.collio.it), Carso (www.vinidoccarso.eu), Friuli-Aquileia (www.viniaquileia.it) , Friuli-Annia (www.docfriuliannia.it), Friuli-Latisana (www.docfriulilatisana.com), Lison-Pramaggiore (www.lison-pramaggiore.it).
In the second area are working the Consorzio Doc: Friuli-Isonzo (www.vinidocisonzo.it) and Friuli-Grave (www.docfriuligrave.com).
In the both areas the above signed Consorzio produce about the same wines which everywhere maintain identical characteristic tastes even if with different weight, as above we indicated.

Now also the new mark DOC FRIULI beside the 8 Doc Area marks of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region

The DOC FRIULI mark has been created for allowing to the farms of whole FVG region the production and the trade of the wine varieties more requested by foreign markets.      Precisely, only theese wines (among the 50 friulian ones) may be distinguished with this mark: Chardonnay, Friulano, Malvasia, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer aromatico, Ribolla gialla sparkling, Verduzzo, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot nero, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso; it means almost all the transnational varieties and only three native ones.
Anyway, theese wines (with the Doc Friuli mark) and all the other regional wines may be produced by every farm also with the Doc and Docg marks of the area where the farm is located (naturally according to its particular specifications).
In reality, the specifications of the Doc Friuli mark are (saving the traditional, well known, quality of the FVG wines) more simple, have not all the rules for maximum quality and typicalness, have a larger ratio quantity/hectare, streamline bureaucratic procedures.
The first bottles with the new DOC FRIULI mark has been put in the market in 2017 spring.

To the lovers is also useful to mark the localities where particular wines are produced which escape strict classifications, then it should be known personally in the specific, singular landscape-cultural environment of which are fruit.
These localities (and its more particular wines) are, in our opinion, the following ones (in red colour in the map):

- Castelnovo (4 red and 3 white native wines) (vedi scheda)
- Ramandolo (Ramandolo: www.ramandolo.it)
- Faedis (originary Refosco : www.prolocofaedis.it > Cosa offre il territorio > Il Refosco)
- Prepotto (Schioppettino: www.schioppettinodiprepotto.it)
- Rosazzo (Picolit, Pignolo, Tazzelenghe)
- Mariano (The ‘Ferretti’)
- Carso (Terrano) (www.vinidoccarso.eu)
- Aquileia, Carlino, Latisana on the Via Annia (vedi scheda)
